Do you ever watch videos of people applying makeup products or see people wearing them and the product looks absolutely flawless; on the other hand, it seems like whenever you try those same products it doesn’t give you the same result or if you do get a similar result, it only lasts for a short time? The reason you don’t get the same result is probably that you didn’t consider the difference in their skin tone and/or skin type in comparison to yours. There are tons of great makeup products on the market but every product is not designed to work perfectly for every person! The main reason why some of us struggle with having flawless application results or getting our makeup to last for several hours is that some people don’t choose the right products for their skin type. On the other hand, some people may have the correct formula for their skin type but fail to accurately factor in climate conditions/activities that can affect their wear time. Just in case you’ve made any of these mistakes in the past, we’re going to give you some suggestions to help you find the right products and formulas for your foundation to be flawless and last longer going forward.

Let’s start with the basics, “skin type” as well as the products that work best with each one. Since finding the right products to match your skin type is one of the best ways to help you to look your best all day/night long. When it comes to skin type most of us have normal, oily, dry or combination skin (a mixture of more than one skin type). Although there are multiple blends of combination skin type; it seems as if most of the people with combination skin, like me, have normal or dry skin covering most of their face with oily skin in their t-zone. The t-zone is the area of your face that covers your forehead, goes down the bridge of your nose and across from cheek to cheek. Once you determine your skin type, it’s easier to figure out which products are formulated to work best with your skin.

In terms of foundation, powder foundations are designed to work best with oily skin. Whereas cream and liquid foundations are formulated to work best with normal, dry and combination skin types. With that said, powder foundations are not the only option for those with oily skin. One of the most popular formulas on the market now is matte finish foundations; they work really well with oily skin and it’s the formula I recommend most. Most matte finish foundations are produced in a liquid formula that transforms when it dries to provide a flawless matte finish, unlike most liquid foundations. When it comes to cream foundations, some cream formulas transform also. There are foundations that are produced as a cream that transition to a powder finish once it dries. These products offer individuals with oily, normal and especially combination skin the option of having a flawless powder finish without the risks that come along with powder foundation application.

Another important factor in getting flawless foundation results, when using any foundation formula, is proper skin preparation. Regardless of the steps/products you choose to use when preparing your face, we always recommend using a primer right before applying foundation. Primers are designed to protect the skin and provide a base for your foundation that helps makeup go on smoother and provide a flawless finish that lasts longer. When it comes to selecting a primer, there are countless formula variations available. These variations target certain concerns that individuals face with their skin/makeup while others are designed to enhance certain features. There are many variations in primer formulas including, but not limited to, color correction, moisturizing, illuminating, blurring, acne treating, pore erasing and pore-filling. Most of these primer formulas work well for individuals with normal, dry and some of the combination skin types. On the other hand, a mattifying or shine controlling primer would be a better option for those of us with oily or oily combination skin. If you have oily/oily combination skin and prefer to use one of the other primers as a base, plan to sweat more than usual or have extremely oily skin, you also can add a layer of finely milled setting powder after priming to combat oil. By adding setting powder on top of your primer, before your foundation application, it will not only provide a smoother surface but also correct the oiliness in the skin to provide a long-lasting and flawless finish. When using setting powder be sure to choose a shade of powder that’s close to your skin tone (translucent powder would work best for those with light, fair and some medium skin tones). When you apply setting powder to your either your entire face or just the oily areas, it provides an extra barrier of protection that will help your makeup to look flawless and last longer.

Individuals that wear liquid and cream foundation can also set their foundation into place. By applying a layer of a setting powder, pressed powder or finishing powder on top of liquid or regular cream formula foundations to set them into place. I would recommend this process for individuals that have oily skin, participate in vigorous activities, visit/live in hotter climates, have conditions that cause them to sweat or if you simply want an extra barrier of protection; Setting your liquid or cream foundation can help keep your makeup in place and help it to last longer. On the other hand, I would not recommend adding a layer of setting power to your foundation if you’re using a powder foundation or a cream foundation that transitions to powder. For powder/powder finish foundations, you can simply spray your face with setting spray to set your makeup and extend your wear time. Individuals that use liquid and cream foundations can also use setting spray when finishing their look for an added bonus. By spritzing your face with setting spray, rose water, primer water or finishing spray, you’d be adding another layer of protection that also helps your makeup lasts longer. This process works exceptionally well for individuals that use a layer of powder to set their foundation; setting spray seals the products together and seemingly melts them into your skin providing a luxurious finish that lasts for hours and hours. Setting spray basically binds all your products together while setting them into place to give you an extra layer of protection.

Now that you know how to select the best foundation formula for your skin type along with which products work best with your skin type to help you get your foundation to look flawless and lasts longer, we hope you get the chance to rave about your foundation results in the future!
